Jesus and Homosexuality

I have to admit that this post has been a long time coming, but with the Supreme Court ruling that happened yesterday, I decided there was no better time to post it than now. If you haven't heard by now (you must live under a rock), the Supreme Court has now legalized gay marriage for all 50 states. And thanks to that, yesterday was a day that I wished I didn't have social media, due to everyone suddenly becoming a self-proclaimed expert on all topics of the law.

Let me start with this disclaimer: if you are one of those people who posted the verse in Leviticus on homosexuality being wrong, you are all but asking for someone to comment a verse from that same book about not being allowed to eat pork or shave your beard. Come on now people, Jesus saved us from the old Law. Now, don't think I'm here to argue whether or not gay marriage is wrong or right. There are about 10,000 people arguing that, so I just find it unnecessary.

So with that, comes my point. There are so many Christians out there who are absolutely horrified over the fact that this is now legal that it seems to be all that many in the Church can talk about. In fact, it seems that homosexuality has been all that some people have been able to talk about for a long time. Yes, homosexuality is talked about in the New Testament. There is absolutely no denying that. Romans 1:26-27 and 1 Corinthians 6:9 speak clearly about this topic and I do believe every Word of God to be true.

HOWEVER, these are TWO passages. While God-inspired Paul wrote truth, let's thumb back a few books to the teaching of Jesus. Here, you will find the main topics of the New Testament. The first is Salvation. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the World that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." Boom. There's the whole point of the Bible.

Second, if you read the New Testament, you will find one of Jesus' favorite topics: Love.

"By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." -John 14:35"

"The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." -Mark 12:31

Do you get that? The second most important command that Jesus gave us, right after loving God, was to love our neighbors. Notice that He did not say it was to ensure that our neighbors understand every truth of the Gospel or to condemn our neighbors of their sins. He said to LOVE our neighbors.

Come on Christians, we have GOT to stop with our hate-filled, damnation-preaching statuses and proclamations. It is not our place. It's time for all of us to wake up and realize that billions of people are dying and going to hell. We aren't going to win them to the Gospel by telling people how wrong and sinful they are. It is imperative that we show people the love of Christ before all else.

Besides, we already know who wins in the end.
