Starting to Reflect (Already?)
This week has flown by. Here I am, sitting in a coffee shop, wondering how it got to be that I only have one full week left here in Clarkston. This time next week, I will be cleaning my apartment and packing to leave for debrief on that Monday. I have been slowly attempting to process and put together the things that God has shown me over the past (almost) two months.
First, is that He works in the coolest ways ever. Every Tuesday night since we've been here, we have done a Kid's Club, where we do a Bible story, sing songs, and have a craft. Most of the refugee kids speak English, since they start going to school very soon after they arrive in America. However, almost none of their parents speak good enough English for us to communicate well with, which can be pretty discouraging. But what we have learned is that after Kid's club each Tuesday night, many of these kids will go back home and tell their parents the Bible story they learned in their own language. What an amazing way that God has overcome this language barrier we have!
Another thing that God has taught me is that it isn't about what I do. A lot of times, it can feel like I haven't done a lot of big things since I've been here. Yet, it very rarely is about the big things. It's the little things that we do to show people that we love them that speak the loudest. And ultimately, it's not at all about what WE do. It's about what God does. Without Him, we are quite literally nothing.
One of the other big things that I've learned is that my agenda is nothing. Instead of making a plan about what I think needs to be done, I need to be open to whatever it is that God would have me do. Maybe I think that we need to do is go help our friend pay her power bill, since it's a couple weeks overdue. However, maybe what she needs and what God desires for me, is to sit with her, showing her the love of Jesus by just being with her. Maybe that kind of love speaks the loudest.
I have learned so much in the seven weeks I've spent here, and can't wait to see what God will be teaching me in this last week. I can't help but look back at the verse that has spoken to me since the beginning of my time here:
"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ's power may rest in me." -2 Cor. 12:9
Amen
